Grijalva Park at Santiago Creek is located near the intersection of Spring and Prospects Streets. The first phase of the park opened in 2002.
Several years ago, the city purchased the adjacent 27-acre parcel and completed the environmental review and a Conceptual Master Plan for the second phase, now known as the Grijalva extension. City staff and design consultants are currently working on a Master Plan for the extension and a design plan for a proposed gymnasium / sports center.
The project team held several community meetings to gather public input and build consensus about the various park amenities. Based on comments gathered at these meetings, the proposed amenities for the Grijalva extension include:
 | A 24,700-square-foot gymnasium/sports center with courts and classroom space,
 | A 47,300-square-foot aquatic center,
 | A 10,800-square-foot community building,
 | A 10,000-square-foot skate park,
 | A meadow area with a picnic structure, restroom building, tot-lot and outdoor ampitheater,
 | Walking trails. |

Due to design changes between the original conceptual plan to the current plan, additional environmental review is necessary. That process is now underway and there will be a 30-day period for public comment this fall. The community will also have opportunities to comment when the plan goes before the Park Planning and Development Commission and the Orange City Council later this year.
If approved by the City Council, the Grijalva extension project will be constructed in phases. Earlier this year, the city applied for a $2 million grant under the Urban Park Act of 2001 to help fund the new gymnasium / sports center. The State of California expects to reach a decision regarding the grant later this month.
The Community Foundation of Orange, a non-profit corporation, is actively raising funds for the new facility. For more information about the foundation’s capital campaign, log on to www.communityfoundationoforange.org.
